Zombie’s Best of 2009

Zombie’s Best of 2009

Continuing on with my favourite / most enjoyed games of 2009.
No.5 – Batman: Arkham Asylum
Batman is the only super hero game in recent memory that wasn’t utter rubbish. Rocksteady captured the brooding atmosphere of the Dark Knight perfectly, slanting more towards the comic book / animated version of Batman but still mean and moody.
They totally [...]

Zombie’s Best of 2009

Zombie’s Best of 2009

I love Christmas, especially now I’ve got kids – it gives me a chance to relieve the magic from my own childhood that feeling of going to bed one night and waking up the next to lots of presents, sweets and chocolates. It was the only day of the year where we were permitted to [...]

Gates! Are You Having a Laugh?

Gates! Are You Having a Laugh?

Once again I’m playing on playing Modern Warfare 2 on my PS3 with nothing but a handful of friends, my young brother-in-law and his friend (giving me abuse in a search and destroy session) and I think to myself “Is this it, is this what multiplayer gaming has come to?”
My mind drifts back to the [...]

Shadow Complex

Shadow Complex
4.5

This is probably the best XBOX Live Arcade title ever released.
Shadow Complex is clearly inspired by the classic 2D side-scrolling arcade adventures of the Super Nintendo generation (the first Golden Age of Videogames).
The game contains tropes from both Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, but in motion it feels much closer to the [...]

One Console to Rule Them All

One Console to Rule Them All

Do you remember the 3-DO? It was one of the first CD based video game consoles release in 1993 and packed with some impressive specs for 1993.
I recall seeing the machine in my local Virgin Megastore (now Zavvi) back when it launched and it was an impressive looking machine. It was all sleek and sophisticated [...]

Jumpers for Goalposts

Jumpers for Goalposts

“Football”, “Football”, “Football”, all I hear is bloody football.
For many years now Football has been my passion. As a nine year old kid I would stand shivering on the touchline eagerly awaiting the ball after being ‘persuaded’ to play for the local under Elevens. Right up to the present day where I’m tearing up and [...]

Unfinished Business

Unfinished Business

I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder more commonly known as OCD. Not in the sense that wash my hands ad nauseum after touching a door handle or walk down the street leaping over cracks in the pavement. Rather, I have the kind of disorder that produces sleepless nights worrying about video games; more specifically games I own but haven’t finished. This is surely the most obtuse to anxiety ever. What with the recession, global warming and worsening situation in the Afpac region it seems glib to be concerned with if I’ve seen the end credits of enough of the games I’ve showered on myself in an orgy of online consumerism.

Toy Soliders

Toy Soliders

Once upon a time I used to play with toy soldiers.  Then I used to play as a soldier with a cap gun.  I then progressed to paint-balling weekends, got dressed up in ‘camo’ gear and ran around a forest firing paint pellets (which have a velocity of around 70 mph) at other people – [...]

No Box, No Deal

No Box, No Deal

There’s a storm coming…
Picture the scene – England: on a damp, dark, miserable day in the not too distant future. Petrol is hovering at £2 a litre, Jedward are midway through their second stint in rehab and Saw 10 is showing at the local multiplex. In video game land things have also changed, but not [...]

Wii Are Not Amused

Wii Are Not Amused

When Wii Were Kings
What’s up with the Wii? The once unstoppable Revolution juggernaut has pulled up on the hard shoulder of the Console Race Motorway. A flat tire and an oil leak (falling sales) it desperately awaits the arrival of the AA (a new outing for Mario and Zelda). Microsoft chugs up the middle lane [...]
